9 April 2010 | Van Gilse Symphony No. 4

The Dutch composer Jan van Gilse has had a much moved and turbulent life. He was one of the main advocates of Gustav Mahler’s music in the Netherlands, as a conductor of the Utrechts Stedelijk Orkest his conducting skills and choice of repertoire were thoroughly criticized. He lost both his sons due to Nazi-hands, died in hiding during World War II and was buried under a phony name to protect his friends and family. The German-educated composer left behind an impressive list of compositions, influenced by Gustav Mahler, Richard Strauss and his tutor Engelbert Humperdinck. The world has only just begun to discover the significance of the man and his compositions. The Netherlands Symphony Orchestra presents his magnificent Fourth Symphony, recorded by MonteVerdi Media on the 9th of April. Never recorded before and seldom heard in the concert hall.
