Alexander Gavrylyuk was born in 1984 in the Ukraine and began his piano studies at the age of seven. He gave his first concerto performance when he was nine years old. In 1996 he was a prize winner at Senigallia, Italy, and in 1997 he won the Second Prize at the 2nd Horowitz International Piano Competition in Kiev. The next big step for Alexander Gavrylyuk was going back to compete at the 3rd Horowitz International Piano Competition and winning the coveted First Prize and Gold Medal in 1999.
Alexander Gavrylyuk was proclaimed as “the best sixteen year old pianist of the late twentieth century” by critics in Japan in November 2000 after winning the First Prize at the prestigious Hamamatsu International Piano Competition in Japan. He was 16 years old in a field of competitors ranging in age from 16 to 32. Alexander Gavrylyuk returns regularly to Japan, touring and performing to a full house in Suntory Hall and Tokyo Opera City Hall. His first two CD’s were recorded in Japan.
In April 2005 Alexander Gavrylyuk won the First Prize, the Gold Medal as well as the award for Best Performance of a Classical Concerto at the internationally renowned Arthur Rubinstein International Piano Masters Competition in Tel Aviv. That same year VAI International recorded his live performance at the Miami International Piano Festival, USA, for an international DVD release which went on to receive four and five star ratings in the international press. In May 2007 he recorded his second DVD with VAI.
Alexander Gavrylyuk lived in Sydney, Australia from 1998 to 2006. In 2003 he joined the honour roll and became a Steinway Artist. His Australian concert activities in more recent years include recitals at the Sydney Opera House, the City Recital Hall in Sydney as well as performances with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra and the West Australian Symphony Orchestra.
In January 2007 Alexander Gavrylyuk had his solo debut recital at the Great Hall of the Moscow Conservatory at the invitation of Nikolay Petrov. He has also performed a solo recital at the Kremlin. In 2007 Alexander Gavrylyuk performed in Australia, Canada, Israel, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Poland, Portugal, Russia, Taipei and the USA.
Alexander Gavrylyuk has performed with the Russian National Orchestra, the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra, the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra, the Tokyo Symphony Orchestra, the Osaka Philharmonic, the Warsaw Philharmonic Orchestra, the Israel Chamber Orchestra, the Kiev Philharmonic Orchestra, the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra and the West Australian Symphony Orchestra. Alexander Gavrylyuk has worked with conductors like Ashkenazy, Blomstedt, Ettinger, Fedoseyev, Gruppman, Lazarev, Raiskin, Sanderling, Segerstam, Simonov, Soudant, Spivakov, Talmi and Tovey.
Alexander Gavrylyuk’s upcoming engagements include a solo recital in the Master Pianists series at the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam and concerts with the Borodin Quartet, the Netherlands Philharmonic Orchestra, the Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra, the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra and the Warsaw Philharmonic Orchestra. Furthermore Alexander Gavrylyuk will give concerts in Australia, Canada, Japan, Mexico, USA, Poland, Russia and Taiwan.
In November 2009 Alexander Gavrylyuk will record and perform the complete Prokofiev concerti with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra conducted by Vladimir Ashkenazy.
In May 2010 Alexander Gavrylyuk will make his debut with the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra conducted by Mikhail Pletnev, playing the Prokofiev Piano Concerto No. 2.
