This year, MonteVerdi will be celebrating the life and works of Haydn, Handel, Mendelssohn and Purcell. Franz Joseph Haydn, the tutor of Mozart and Beethoven, died 200 years ago on May 31st. George Frederick Handel, the man responsible for one of the first traffic jams in London on the public rehearsal of his Music for the Royal Fireworks in 1749, died 250 years ago on April 14th. And Jakob Ludwig Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy, to give him his full name, born 200 years ago on February 3rd 1809. Not terribly well regarded by his Romantic contemporaries, Mendelssohn is perhaps best known for his ‘wedding march’ – first used as such 1847, and still popular today. This year also marks the 350th aaniversary of Henry Purcell's birth. Four big composers: one big year!
