A music fan was stabbed to death as he left a night concert featuring the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. The 38 year-old, who has not been named, died almost instantly after being knifed in the chest during an argument with at least two teenagers. He was walking to his car after the family concert in Priory Park, Southend, Essex. The victim's girlfriend, her teenage children and friends were just yards away but did not see the incident on Saturday evening. Friends of the family said they believed he died in an attempted mugging. The group had been at the Concert in the Park, organised by the Rotary Club for the past 13 years. The popular concert was attended by 4,000 people who took picnics while listening to the music. Locals were last night saddened that such a "wonderful" fund-raising event had ended in tragedy. Richard Morgan, a borough councillor for Southend-on-Sea, said: "The whole area has been knocked sideways by this tragedy. Priory Park is a nice family place. From what I understand everyone was having a nice day. "The concert ended with the 1812 Overture and then the fireworks and then this happened. "It doesn't make sense; it was a philharmonic orchestra, not a heavy metal band." The victim, from South Woodham Ferrers, was attacked moments after leaving Priory Park. (Telegraph)
