On the 10th of May we celebrate motherhood all over the world. Mother’s Day is a time for each family to show their appreciation and love and therefore MonteVerdi has selected the most beautiful videos which feature all kinds of mothers: from Puccini’s Madama Butterfly, who gave her life for her child, to the Queen of the Night from Mozart’s ‘Die Zauberflöte’ who pushes her daughter to the limits to get what she wants. And let’s not forget Johannes Brahms who dedicated the fifth part of his beautiful ‘German Requiem’ to the memory of his beloved mother and the world renowned soprano Anna Netrebko, who just became a mother herself for the first time. Daniel Barenboim made his public debut on the piano aged 7, served as music director of some of the greatest orchestras and opera companies and is still a much in demand pianist. This makes him one of the most prominent musicians of our time but Barenboim doesn’t stop there. With the West Eastern Divan Orchestra (WEDO) he tries to start a dialogue, hoping to find a peaceful solution for the Arab-Israeli conflict. For his work as a ‘builder of musical bridges’ the Istanbul International Music Festival will award Barenboim the Lifetime Achievement honor during this year’s festival, which is the latest of many recognitions. Watch Barenboim and the WEDO perform the ultimate piece about Brotherly Love: Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9.
It doesn’t matter in which part of the world they perform, the judgment is always the same: they rock! The Simon Bolivar Youth Orchestra, consisting of young Venezuelans from poor economic backgrounds, and its young superstar conductor Gustavo Dudamel are a true sensation in the classical music world. Hear them perform Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 5 in a newly released Deutsche Grammophon recording.

On the 16th of May MonteVerdi and the Combattimento Consort Amsterdam present the first ever internet live-stream of Telemann’s comical opera ‘Pimpinone’. Brought to you live from the unique Amsterdam restaurant ‘Fifteen’, this hilarious production tells about a story as old as time: the battle of the sexes. Buy your tickets here for only €6.99
