It is the end of an era: the legendary Spanish tenor José Carreras has announced that he will retire from the opera stage. The 67-year –old Carreras can no longer cope with the demands of performing major roles. Carreras started his operatic career aged 11 and has excelled in the operas of Verdi and Puccini, but he gained fame with a wider audience together with his colleagues Plácido Domingo and Luciano Pavarotti as one of the Three Tenors. Now available on MonteVerdi: The Essential José Carreras, a two disc Sony Classics CD which features all the highlights of his career.
As Carreras announced his leave from the stage, Simon Rattle decided to stay a little longer. Last week it was announced that this British conductor has prolonged his contract with the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra, one of the best orchestras in the world, to 2018. Good news for all the classical music lovers in the world, since this partnership has become a guarantee for beautiful concerts. Watch them perform together in three wonderful video’s, featuring the works of Ravel, Gershwin, Brahms, Wagner and more.

Last week was a good one for trumpeter Alison Balsom since she has become the first British woman to win the best Female Artist of the Year award at the Classical BRIT Awards. Balsom, a recipient of the BRIT award for Young British Classical Performer in 2006, has beaten the sopranos Anna Netrebko and Danielle de Niese to it.
