Last week, MonteVerdi Media announced a unique collaboration. The record label Challenge Records, the Orkest van het Oosten (the Netherlands Symphony Orchestra) and MonteVerdi Media will record 4 or 5 productions together in the next three seasons. All recordings will be in Full HD and distributed by MonteVerdi Media on the internet, via the classical music channels BravaHDTV and BravaNL and through mobile devices. The three partners will start their collaboration with a recording on the 16th of October, from the new Muziekcentrum Enschede. The theme of the concert is 'A fierce Offenbach' and the program includes Offenbach's Concerto militaire for cello and orchestra and Beethoven's magnificent Symphony No. 7.
“My subject is war and the pity of war. The poetry is in the pity." These are the words of the great war poet Wilfred Owen, who was killed in action during the First World War, aged 25. His fellow countrymen Benjamin Britten found the inspiration in his poetry to write his moving War Requiem on the occasion of the reconsecration of Coventry Cathedral, a building almost entirely destroyed by Nazi bombs. This piece, performed by the Arnhem Philharmonic Orchestra and Martin Sieghart, will be at the centre of the 65st commemoration of Operation Market Garden and the Battle of Arnhem. The BBC judged that the cycle ‘absolutely delivers on Brahms’ depth and beauty’ while The Telegraph dubbed it ‘a marvelous achievement’. Although the music of Brahms is amongst the core repertoire of the Berliner Philharmoniker, not many will link the orchestra’s principal conductor Sir Simon Rattle with this music. The newly released cycle of the four symphonies however, recorded live in the Berlin Philharmonie, proves that Rattle and the Berliner are a great team when it comes to performing Brahms. Now available on MonteVerdi.
Pjotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky is one of the universally beloved composers and things weren’t very different in his days: he was the most the most celebrated Russian musician of his time. Roland John Wiley tells the story of his sad but productive life in a new biography: from how he seemed to be a child prodigy in everything but music to the uncertain circumstances of his death. A must-have for everyone who loves Tchaikovsky’s music!
