Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra’s The Christmas Matinee
The Christmas Matinee is an outstanding milestone in the history of the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra’s television recordings. It all started in 1975 when Bernard Haitink conducted the first televised Christmas Matinee with Maurice Ravel’s Daphnis et Choé on the program. Two years later, this was followed, by the kick-off of the Gustav Mahler cycle, directly broadcasted on December 25 to television channels worldwide. Not only did Haitink and the RCO document their highly regarded Mahler interpretation for television, but this highly successful initiative also paved the way for an everlasting tradition of Christmas Matinees. After Haitink, chief-conductor Riccardo Chailly put his own stamp on the tradition by programming Italian opera and 20th century orchestral masterpieces. Mariss Jansons brought back the ‘crown jewels’ of classical music and invited world-famous soloists such as Daniel Barenboim and Thomas Hampson for the Christmas matinees. This year the Christmas Matinee (edition No. 34) is one big celebration of opera featuring Latvian mezzo-soprano Elina Garanca. Introduced by outstanding opera overtures, she will shine in her most beloved opera arias from Mozart, Rossini and Bizet: a program not to miss. This festive concert will be broadcast live on MonteVerdi.TV.
