Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra – Music to Watch

Full length, high quality videos
Quicklinks
The Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra currently enjoys a long-term relationship with the two Dutch public broadcasters: AVRO and NPS. Thanks to this partnership the orchestra has been recorded for television since the early years of television. Aside from the concert broadcasts, the AVRO and NPS have also made a series of fascinating documentaries of the orchestra and it’s conductors. An outstanding milestone in the history of the RCO’s television recordings is the Christmas Matinee. It all started in 1975 when Bernard Haitinks conducted the first televised Christmas Matinee with Ravel Daphnis et Choé on the program. Two years later the Mahler cycle was broadcast direct on December 25 to many television channels worldwide. Not only did Haitink and the RCO document their highly regarded Mahler interpretation for television, this outstanding success also paved the way for an everlasting tradition of Christmas Matinees. After Haitink Chailly put his own stamp on the tradition by programming Italian opera and 20th century orchestral masterpieces, Mariss Jansons brought back the ‘crown jewels’ of classical music and invited world famous soloists such as Daniel Barmenboim and Thomas Hampson for the Christmas matinees.

This year the 2008 Christmas Matinee (edition No. 34) will be broadcast live on Dutch television and MonteVerdi.TV From the abundance of RCO television recordings, MonteVerdi offers a unique selection of eight concerts and documentaries, available as video on demand. Enjoy the great quality of orchestral playing in a stunning 1.7 MB video stream. You have never viewed and listened to classical music as you can do on MonteVerdi.TV.

How different this film is from the other RCO documents. It’s a ballet film on Beethoven’s Symphony No. 7. This symphony was described by opera composer Richard Wagner as a "grand apotheosis of the dance"; a celebration of man's delight in his own physical energy. Choreographer Toer van Schayk choreographed and designed this studio recording with the esteemed Dutch National Ballet. The music is played by the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, conducted by Bernard Haitink.
